NWA 978 (R3.8) - 5.3g Complete Slice with Pristine Inclusions
Northwest Africa 978 (NWA 978) was discovered during 2001 in the Sahara Desert,
Africa and later classified as a rare R3.8 Chondrite. It has a Shock Rating of S3 and a Weathering Level of W2. The Total Known
Weight is listed as 722g but more specimens have been recovered and some are likely classified and paired under several
different NWA names. Some also have slightly different classifications such as R3.7, R3.9 and R4.
Some of the black areas/inclusions in the slice below (such as
centre-left of the first image) represent unequilibrated,
primitive clasts. For another clearer example and further
comprehensive information on these clasts, please see the
NWA 2921 page. The specimen
below is a 5.3g Complete Slice and is part of the Meteorites Australia Collection (MA.06.0054).
