Oum Dreyga (Amgala)
On October 16th 2003, Moroccan soldiers
stationed in Western Sahara saw a meteorite falling on the Gour
Lafkah Mountains, about 21 km from Oum Dreyga at 2:00am local
time. The fall location was near the Mauritania border where
there is
a 670 km long wall that was built in 1985, protected by antipersonnel
mines, and guarded by soldiers. Soldiers collected about 17kg of
meteorites in total however most were retrieved after rainfall
and thus are slightly oxidised. A small number were picked up
immediately after the fall and are very fresh. Pieces of this
fall were originally sold under the name - Amgala. Oum Dreyga
has been classified as an Ordinary Chondrite, H3-5 Breccia.
These meteorites have a Shock Rating of 4 and a Weathering Level
of W0. Below are four individuals with
weights of 7.6g, 15.08g, 36.0g and a 1.0g Oriented Individual.
The 15.08g individual is from the first small batch bought out by Mike
Farmer and probably represents one of the first collected Oum Dreyga
meteorites. It is the freshest meteorite in the Meteorites
Australia Collection.
