NWA 2490
NWA 2490 was
discovered in the Sahara Desert in Morocco, Africa during 2002.
A single
stone weighing just 60g was found and has since been classified
as a very rare transitional H/L3 Chondrite. This meteorite has a
Shock Rating of 2 and a Weathering Level of 3.
As evident in the photos below, there are a number of interesting areas in the
meteorite. First, is the variable chondrule field towards the
top/centre of the specimen which displays an obvious darker
matrix. This section is enlarged in the third image. There is
also the other field of different chondrules towards the
bottom/right where they look to be less metamorphosed than the
other majority. In fact a few even look to have been in a
plastic state when they accreted. Finally there is
the black fragment inclusion on the far centre left which has
been enlarged in the last image. While it looks to be very out
of place and most likely is from a different origin
(carbonaceous?), there are complete chondrules similar to the
others totally encased within this inclusion. These type of
inclusions have been theorised to be heavily altered pieces of
CM or CI material with phantom chondrules. This specimen is part of the
Meteorites Australia Collection (MA.05.0002).
