Northwest Africa 4814 (NWA 4814)
NWA 4814 was discovered in the Sahara Desert
in Northwest Africa during 2006 in the form of a single stone
weighing 1120g. This visually spectacular meteorite was
classified as a Rumurutiite chondrite breccia with a specific
classification of R3-6. NWA 4814 has a Shock Rating of S3 and a
Weathering Level of W3.
The photos below depict a meteorite with
obvious clasts of different size and type. Some of the more
notable are the darker ones with the plentiful array of small
closely packed chondrules. These represent the primitive and
unaltered material which formed the Rumurutiite parent body. The
larger and lighter clast at the top centre of the first image
shows a part of the same body which underwent metamorphism.
Therefore the chondrules are less discernible and appear to
‘fade’ into the matrix. This specimen is part of the Meteorites
Australia Collection (MA.08.0006).
