Northwest Africa 5245 (NWA 5245)
NWA 5245 was discovered in the Sahara Desert
during 2007 as a single stone weighing 418g. This fascinating
meteorite was classified as an extremely rare unbrecciated R3
chondrite with a Shock Rating of S2 and a Weathering Level of
W2. Most of the Rumuruti Chondrites are heavily brecciated with
mixed petrologic grades ranging from 3-6. They all represent
surface regoliths from their parent-body/asteroid which apart
from their mixed grades, is also evident from xenolithic
inclusions and higher levels of noble gases from the solar wind.
This type-3 meteorite is a rare example of complete
primitive and relatively unaltered material which formed the
Rumuruti parent-body. This specimen is part of the Meteorites Australia Collection
(MA.08.0007).
